Storm and Electrical Safety Tips
-
Re-check your evacuation zone: zone maps changed for 2026 in Apollo Beach.
-
Mobile and manufactured homes are in Zone A no matter where they are.
-
Look up your address on HEAT before a storm is in the Gulf.
-
Fight salt corrosion: salt air eats outdoor outlets, panels, AC disconnects, pool equipment and meter bases.
-
Look for rust or white crust, and have corroded parts replaced with weather-rated equipment.
-
After flooding or surge, keep it off. Salt water damages wiring and breakers even after it dries.
-
Have equipment inspected before you turn the power back on.
-
Check dock and boat lift power: they need GFCI protection and wiring rated for wet locations.
-
If you feel a tingle in the water or on a ladder, get out and call an electrician.
-
Generators belong outside, away from windows, doors and the garage.
-
Never backfeed through an outlet. Use a transfer switch or interlock.
-
Protect against surges: lightning and storm restoration work can cause surges.
-
A whole-home protector helps guard AC units, pool pumps and electronics.
-
Stay clear of downed lines. Treat every downed line as live.
