Storm and Electrical Safety Tips

Give older panels a checkup if your home still has its original panel.
Especially if breakers trip often, the panel feels warm, or you see rust or scorch marks.
Use generators safely: run portable generators outside, far from doors, windows and the garage.
Never plug a generator into a wall outlet.
A properly installed transfer switch or interlock keeps you and line workers safe.
Protect against summer lightning: our afternoon storms bring a lot of lightning.
A whole-home surge protector at the panel helps guard your electronics.
Add point-of-use protectors for TVs and computers.
Check for water: if water reaches outlets, your panel or appliances, keep the power off.
Have an electrician inspect before turning the power back on.
Know your zone: look up your address on HEAT.
Sign up for HCFL Alert before June, not when a storm is already in the Gulf.
Stay clear of downed lines. Treat every downed line as live.
