Storm and Electrical Safety Tips for the Keys
Fight salt corrosion. Salt air eats outdoor outlets, panels, AC disconnects, and meter bases. Look for rust or white crust and have corroded parts replaced with weather-rated equipment.
After flooding or surge, keep it off. Salt water damages wiring and breakers even after it dries. Have equipment inspected before you re-energize.
Generators belong outside. Keep them away from windows, doors, and under-house enclosures. Never backfeed through an outlet; use a transfer switch or interlock.
Add surge protection. Storms and restoration work can cause surges. A whole-home protector helps guard AC units and electronics.
Plan for evacuation. With one road out, leave early when told to. Shut off breakers to flood-prone areas before you go.
